SAY Opens New Pre-School with Emphasis on Chinese Language and Culture Immersion
SAY is opening SAY Barnard Children's Center located on the new campus of Barnard Elementary School. Children enrolled in the preschool (ages 3-5) will experience the Chinese culture through art, music, drama, and physical education activites. This new program focus and curriculum will align with the Barnard Elementary School's academic standards and school-wide exposure of students to Mandarin language and Chinese culture. In addition to the preschool, we will offer extended afternoon care.
The planned opening date for the center is September 2013. With this program, SAY's Extended Day unit now has a total of seven Preschools that also include: Balboa Elementary school in Shelltown, Bayview Terrace Elementart School in Pacific Beath, Cadman Elementary in Bay Ho, Kate Session Elementary in Pacific Beach, Language Academy in the College area, and Washington Elementary in Little Italy. All seven SAY preschool programs serve children 3-5 years of age with the exception of Balboa Elementary, which also servces infants and toddlers.

SAY's Sheri Easterly Honored as Public Safety Champion by County
On April 9, 2013, SAY was honored by the County Health and Human Services Agency as being one of the public health champions. Sheri Easterly, SAY's North Central program manager for the Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Program (ATOD), was honored at the "12th Annual Live Well, San Diego!" Public Health Champion Awards ceremony. The awards reflect achievements related to the 2013 National Public Health Week (April 1-7) theme, Public Health is ROI (Return on Investment): Save Lives, Save Money! The theme focuses on a safe and healthy workplace, safe and active commuting, and living in healthy communities.
"These individuals and organizations are working to ensure that the County is a safe and healthy place to live and work," said Chairman Greg Cox, County Board of Supervisors. "Iapplaud their efforts. Their great work is an inspiration to us all."
Sheri Easterly has worked in human development for more than two decades. She is currently the program manager for the Noth Central Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Program at Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) San Diego. Her work focuses on policy, media advocacy, community organizing, and youth development. Easterly is also involved with several community coalitions that work to empower parents and community residents to take an active role in building healthy and safe places to live.
Community Steps Up to Send High School Students to Prom
Local businesses stepped up to donate generous amounts of quality men's and women's formal attire. Thank you Principal Financial Group, RICOH USA, Dept Wave Counseling, Robbins Arroyo LLP, and Wells Fargo Advisors. Also a big thanks to Neiman Marcus for donating multiple boxes and bags of cosmetics to finish the look of our Crawford High School young men and women. The generous support of business and community members gave Crawford High School students a night to remember - and the feeling of awe and gratitude that comes from being supported beyond one's imagination by someone you don't even know.
